The Wegovy pill is the first licensed daily GLP-1 weight loss tablet in the UK, approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026. It contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, semaglutide, but is taken as a once-daily tablet rather than a once-weekly injection. No needles. No fridge. Just one tablet, every morning.
What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is an oral weight loss tablet containing semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in the Wegovy injection. It belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which work by mimicking a natural hormone your body produces after eating.
It was approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026, making it the first licensed daily GLP-1 weight loss tablet in Europe. It is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and is backed by the Phase 3 OASIS clinical programme.
For people who have been hesitant about injections, or who want a more convenient daily routine, the Wegovy pill offers a needle-free alternative with a clinically similar weight loss profile to the injection.

Important information
DoktorABC UK is a digital health platform that connects patients with independent, UK-registered prescribers. DoktorABC UK does not itself provide medical care, issue prescriptions or dispense medicines. All clinical decisions are made by the UK-registered prescriber following an individual medical assessment.
How does it work?
Semaglutide copies the action of GLP-1, a hormone your body naturally releases after eating. GLP-1 acts on areas of the brain that regulate hunger and fullness, and semaglutide mimics this effect throughout the day.
In practice, this means it can help to:
- Take the edge off hunger through the day
- Help you feel fuller sooner after eating
- Cut cravings and make portion control easier
- Support steady weight loss when paired with diet and activity changes
The Wegovy pill supports weight loss, but it works best alongside a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and longer-term lifestyle changes. It is not a replacement for these changes. Think of it as a tool that makes those changes more manageable, not a shortcut that removes the need for them.
Dosing and titration
Your UK-registered prescriber will set and adjust your dose schedule based on how you respond to treatment. The guide below shows the standard titration pathway. It is a reference, not a self-titration instruction. Some people achieve good results at an earlier dose step and may stay there. The 25mg dose is the maximum, not an automatic target. If a lower dose is working well and is better tolerated, treatment can stay at that step.
| Step | Dose | Minimum duration |
|---|---|---|
| Start | 1.5mg once daily | 4 weeks |
| Step 2 | 4mg once daily | 4 weeks |
| Step 3 | 9mg once daily | 4 weeks |
| Maintenance | 25mg once daily | Maximum dose |
If you experience side effects at any stage, speak to your UK-registered prescriber before adjusting your dose. Do not change your dose without clinical guidance.
How to take Wegovy pill
Because semaglutide is sensitive to food, drink and other medicines, the timing and method of taking the tablet matters significantly. Absorption can be greatly reduced if these instructions are not followed. For the best results, follow these steps every morning:
- Take it first thing after waking, on an empty stomach, ideally after at least 8 hours without food
- Swallow the tablet whole with no more than 120ml of plain water
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other medicines
- Do not split, crush or chew the tablet
Why does timing matter?
Food, other drinks and other medicines significantly reduce how much semaglutide your body absorbs. Missing the 30-minute window, even occasionally, can reduce the effectiveness of your treatment. Building a consistent morning routine around your tablet is one of the most important things you can do to get the best results.
Who is it for?
The Wegovy pill may be suitable for adults living with overweight or obesity who want medical support to lose weight. As a general guide, it may be considered for adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or above, or
- A BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes or sleep apnoea
If you are already using a weight loss treatment and considering switching to the Wegovy pill, suitability may be assessed on a different basis, so the thresholds above should not be treated as a hard cut-off that rules you out.
Suitability is always confirmed by a UK-registered prescriber during your online consultation. The consultation is the right place to discuss your full medical history, current medications and individual circumstances. A full list of contraindications and safety considerations is included in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication.
Side effects
As with all medicines, the Wegovy pill can cause side effects. Most are gut-related, tend to be at their worst when starting treatment or stepping up to a higher dose, and often improve as your body adjusts.
Common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Stomach discomfort or indigestion
- Bloating
- Reduced appetite
- Tiredness, dizziness or headache
If you experience vomiting or diarrhoea, it is important to keep your fluid intake up to avoid dehydration.
Side effects across all three treatments:
| Treatment | Most common side effects |
|---|---|
| Wegovy pill | Digestive: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation |
| Wegovy injection | Digestive: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation (same pattern as the pill) |
| Mounjaro | Digestive: Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, and constipation |
When to seek help:
Speak to your GP, pharmacist or NHS 111 if side effects are severe, persistent or worrying. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:
- Severe or ongoing stomach pain
- Signs of dehydration
- Sudden changes in vision
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing
For a full list of side effects, always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication.
How it compares
All three treatments reduce appetite and increase fullness. The main differences are how they are taken, storage requirements and convenience. The figures below are from separate clinical trials and are not the result of direct head-to-head comparisons. They are intended to help you understand the general landscape, not to recommend one treatment over another. Your UK-registered prescriber will help you decide which option is right for you.

Which one is right for me?
There is no single best option. The right choice depends on needle preference, how well you can keep to the pill's daily routine, tolerability, side effects and personal goals, and it is decided with your UK-registered prescriber at the consultation.
| Option | Consider it if... |
|---|---|
| Wegovy pill | You would rather take a tablet than inject, you travel often (no fridge needed), and you can keep to the strict daily empty-stomach routine |
| Wegovy injection | You want a simpler once-weekly option with no fasting or timing rules, or want the option of a higher dose for greater weight loss |
| Mounjaro | You are focused on the greatest average weight loss in the trials and are happy with a weekly injection |
One practical consideration for the pill is that it must be taken first thing on an empty stomach after at least 8 hours without food, with only a small sip of plain water, and then nothing to eat, drink or take for at least 30 minutes. If keeping to that routine reliably every day is not realistic, a weekly injection may be the more practical option, consistency matters significantly for absorption.
Wegovy pill vs older weight loss tablets
People also compare the Wegovy pill with older weight loss tablets. These work differently and the average weight loss is lower.
| Wegovy pill | Orlistat | Mysimba | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it works | GLP-1 receptor agonist. Reduces appetite and increases fullness | Blocks some dietary fat from being absorbed | Acts on appetite and cravings via the brain |
| Active ingredient | Semaglutide | Orlistat | Naltrexone and bupropion |
| How it's taken | One tablet daily, empty stomach | Capsule with meals, up to three times daily | Tablets, dose built up gradually |
| Average weight loss | Between 14-17% | Between 3-5% | Between 5-9% |
Switching to the Wegovy pill
People may move to the Wegovy pill for a range of reasons, for example, a preference for tablets over injections, easier travel (no refrigeration needed), a dislike of needles, or simply finding a daily routine easier to maintain than a weekly one. It’s important to remember that the tablet has strict timing and fasting rules, and for some people the weekly injection remains the more practical option. If your current treatment is working well, there is no clinical reason to switch.
Switching from the Wegovy injection
Because both the injection and the pill contain semaglutide, switching is really a change in how the medicine is taken rather than a change of medicine. In practice, most people take their last weekly injection, wait around one week, then start the daily tablet, with the timing confirmed by their UK-registered prescriber.
The table below provides a general guide. Your prescriber will confirm the right starting dose and timing based on your treatment history, how you have responded and any side effects.
| Current weekly injection dose | Pill dose that may be considered (daily) |
|---|---|
| 0.25mg | 1.5mg |
| 0.5mg | 4mg |
| 1mg | 9mg |
| 1.7mg | 25mg |
| 2.4mg | 25mg |
| 7.2mg | 25mg |
This table is for guidance only. Your UK-registered prescriber will confirm the appropriate starting dose based on your individual circumstances.
Switching from Mounjaro
Currently on Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and interested in the Wegovy pill? You may be able to switch. Because the two medicines work differently, there is no automatic dose conversion between them. One of our UK-registered prescribers will review your current treatment and decide the right starting dose for you.
It is also worth being upfront: because tirzepatide acts on two hormone pathways rather than one, it has generally shown higher average weight loss in clinical trials than semaglutide. Someone moving from Mounjaro to the Wegovy pill may see a different result. This is not a like-for-like swap and your prescriber will talk this through with you at the consultation.
