Spedra® is a prescription-only medicine for erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men. Erectile dysfunction isthe persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity.
Spedra® contains avanafil, a phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor that works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.It does not cause an erection without sexual stimulation..

What is Spedra®?
Spedra® is a prescription medicine for erectile dysfunction in adult men. It supports the natural erectile response by relaxing blood vessels in the penis and improving blood flow during sexual stimulation.
Spedra® can take effect in as little as 15–30 minutes . and last for up to six hours, though this varies between men.

Who can be considered for treatment with Spedra®?
Spedra® may be considered for adult men aged 18 and over with erectile dysfunction following a medical assessment.
A UK-registered prescriber will consider cardiovascular health and fitness for sexual activity, current medicines, (including nitrates), and relevant medical history, including liver or kidney function and eye conditions
Treatment is not be suitable for everyone.
What strengths are available?
Spedra® is available in 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg.
The usual starting dose is 100 mg, taken approximately 15–30 minutes before sexual activity. Dose adjustments are made by the UK-registered prescriber depending on effectiveness and tolerability.
Can I change my dose?
No. Any dose adjustment should be made in consultation with the UK-registered prescriber.
How should I take Spedra®?
Always take Spedra® exactly as prescribed and in accordance with the patient information leaflet.
Take one tablet approximately 15–30 minutes before sexual activity, swallowed whole with water. It can be taken with or without food. Do not take more than one tablet per day. Sexual stimulation is required for Spedra® to work.
Alcohol may increase the risk of side effects and may reduce erectile response.
What can affect how well Spedra® works?
A number of factors may influence your response to Spedra®, including underlying health conditions (such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease), certain medicines, and incorrect timing or dosage. Heavy alcohol consumption may reduce erectile function and increase the risk of side effects. Your UK-registered prescriber can advise if you are concerned.
When should Spedra® not be used?
Do not take Spedra® if you:
- Are allergic to avanafil or any of its ingredients.
- Take nitrate medicines for chest pain (angina), or use nitric oxide donors such as amyl nitrite ("poppers").
- Take riociguat.
- Have recently had a heart attack or stroke.
- Have severe heart, liver or kidney disease.
- Have very low blood pressure.
- Have certain serious eye conditions.
Spedra® is not suitable for women or men under 18.
Always tell your UK-registered prescriber about your full medical history and current medicines before starting treatment.
Warnings and precautions
Speak to a UK-registered prescriber before using Spedra® if you:
- Have heart problems or have been advised to avoid sexual activity.
- Have kidney or liver impairment.
- Have blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia, leukaemia or multiple myeloma.
- Have an anatomical deformation of the penis or Peyronie's disease.
- Have a stomach ulcer or bleeding disorder.
- Notice sudden changes in your vision or hearing.
Spedra® should not be used alongside other treatments for erectile dysfunction unless specifically advised by a UK-registered prescriber.
Interactions with other medicines, food and drink
Tell your UK-registered prescriber if you take medicines for high blood pressure, alpha blockers, antifungals, medicines for HIV, certain antibiotics, or any other erectile dysfunction treatment.
Alcohol may increase the risk of side effects.
What side effects can occur?
Like all medicines, Spedra® can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them.
Common side effects may include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Flushing
- Nasal congestion
- Feeling warm
Less common side effects may include:
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath on exertion
- Indigestion
- Increased heart rate
Serious side effects (seek urgent medical help):
- Prolonged or painful erection lasting more than four hours (priapism).
- Sudden loss of vision or hearing.
- Severe allergic reactions such as swelling of face, lips or throat, or breathing difficulties.

Driving and operating machinery
Spedra® may cause dizziness in some people. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if affected.
Storage information
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date shown on the packaging.
- Store in the original packaging as directed in the patient information leaflet.
- Dispose of unused medicines safely; ask a pharmacist if unsure.
