What is Sildenafil?
Sildenafil is a medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. It is a generic medicine derived from the well known branded medication Viagra. Sildenafil is a PDE-5 inhibitor and is the active ingredient in both Viagra and Viagra Connect.
The Sildenafil available at DoktorABC is produced by the manufacturer Teva and is fully licensed for UK patients. Sildenafil is subject to the same rigorous testing as its branded counterparts and meets the same high standards for safety and quality. But as a generic medicine it is cheaper, this is because manufacturers did not have to meet the original research costs.
If you have trouble achieving or maintaining an erection, Sildenafil may help you to enjoy an active sex life.
How does Sildenafil work?
Sildenafil is a proven erectile dysfunction treatment that allows you to have sex at your convenience. Simply swallow one tablet before you want to have sex. It is recommended to wait a full hour before having sex.
The medication Sildenafil is named after its own active ingredient, which is the same PDE - 5 inhibitor used in Viagra. Sildenafil works to increase the flow of blood to the penis. If you are sexually aroused you will be able to achieve a full erection and have normal sex. The effects of a single Sildenafil tablet may last for up to 4 hours.
Who can use Viagra?
Sildenafil, as an active ingredient in various medications, has been prescribed to millions of men in dozens of countries. It has enjoyed a reputation as a safe and effective treatment for ED for over 20 years.
Sildenafil has helped users to manage their erectile dysfunction and enjoy sex normally. Its potential side effects are well understood and should not pose a significant problem to the majority of patients.
Unless you have certain specific medical problems, like high blood pressure, or are using a small number of non-compatible prescription medications, you will be able to use Sildenafil safely.
When you complete your confidential medical questionnaire, our online GP will immediately review your health profile and confirm that Sildenafil is the right medication for your needs.
Please read the Side Effects section for full information about whether Sildenafil is suitable for you.
What doses of Sildenafil are available?
DoktorABC’s online GP will review your health profile and approve the dosage that matches your medical needs.
Sildenafil tablets are available at DoktorABC in 3 sizes:
- Sildenafil 25 mg
- Sildenafil 50 mg
- Sildenafil 100 mg
Most patients will receive an initial prescription for Sildenafil 50 mg. Experience shows that this is the optimal dosage for the average man with ED symptoms. Your dosage can be easily adjusted if it is not effective, or if you experience unwelcome side effects.
Erectile dysfunction in younger men is often psychological in origin. An initial 25 mg prescription may be enough to boost their self confidence and help them to overcome their condition.
Men over the age of 70 may be more vulnerable to side effects from Sildenafil. A 25mg dosage is usually recommended as a first prescription. It has been found to balance the beneficial therapeutic effect with a lower risk of side effects. A 25 mg dosage can be adjusted as required.
How to take Sildenafil
Swallow a single tablet with a glass of water 30 minutes - 1 hour before commencing sexual activity. The effects of each tablet may last up to 4 hours.
Do not take more than one tablet at a time and do not use Sildenafil on a daily basis. If you want to have sex more than twice a week you may require a different brand of erectile dysfunction medication such as Cialis Daily.
When you complete your confidential medical questionnaire, our GP will immediately review your health profile and prescribe the most suitable medication for your treatment.
For Sildenafil to be effective you must be sexually aroused. Do not use this medication unless you are planning to have sex and do not take it when drinking alcohol.
Taking a heavier dosage of Sildenafil will not result in a better quality or longer lasting erection, nor will it enhance your sexual performance or level of sexual arousal. If you exceed your prescribed dosage you will increase the risk of unwelcome side effects.
What are the side effects of Sildenafil?
Sildenafil has been used as an active ingredient in various ED medications for over 20 years. The majority of patients will not suffer from serious adverse reactions. Some may experience minor side effects that are easily manageable.
Nonetheless, you should be aware of possible adverse reactions before you begin your treatment.

- Facial flushing
- Hot flush

When not to take Sildenafil

Do not take Sildenafil if you have experienced any of the following:
- Recent heart attack
- Recent stroke
- Low blood pressure
- Severe cardiac problems or heart disease
- Severe liver problems or liver disease
- Rare inherited eye disease
- Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION)
Do not take Sildenafil if you are using any of the following medications:
- Other PDE -5 inhibitors, like Sildenafil or Cialis (Tadalafil)
- CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Guanylate cyclase stimulators
- Nitrates (including recreational use of poppers or amyl nitrate)
