Contraception with Zelleta pill

Zelleta is a birth control mini pill that contains desogestrel (a synthetic version of the hormone progestogen). It is an estrogen-free oral contraceptive that can be up to 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and is suitable for most women over the age of 18. Zelleta is especially recommended for women approaching menopause, and may also be used by heavy smokers over the age of 35. The possible side effects of Zelleta are generally light.

How DoktorABC can help

Start a consultation for your contraceptives and fill in a simple health questionnaire. Then choose your preferred medication from the list of recommended treatment options or keep the default recommended treatment. Our doctor will review your information and if suitable issue your prescription online. Our pharmacy will then send you your medication with free next day delivery.

Please note: Decisions about treatment are for both the prescriber and the person to jointly consider during the consultation. However, the final decision will always be the prescriber’s.

Product information

What is Zelleta?

Zelleta is a contraceptive mini pill containing 75mcg of desogestrel, a synthetic hormone. Taken daily without a break, it tends to cause fewer and milder side effects than traditional combined pills, and because it's estrogen-free, it carries a lower risk of thrombosis.

It's a particularly good option for women who can't take estrogen, those who are breastfeeding, or anyone looking to start contraception shortly after giving birth. Women approaching menopause (45+) or heavy smokers over 35 may also find Zelleta a suitable choice.

How to take Zelleta

Zelleta is a progestin-based mini pill taken once daily, with no break between packets. Each strip contains 28 pills, with the days of the week printed on the back to help you keep track. Take one pill each day at a consistent time (first thing in the morning works well for many people) and simply start a new strip the day after you finish one.

For best protection against pregnancy, begin taking Zelleta on the first day of your menstrual cycle.

Important: Some women experience occasional or irregular vaginal bleeding while taking Zelleta, ranging from light spotting to a heavier flow. This is normal, so carry on taking your pill as usual. However, if bleeding is heavy or persistent, speak to a doctor.

Who can use Zelleta?

Most healthy adult women can use Zelleta throughout their fertile years, often well into their mid-forties and beyond. It contains just one hormone, desogestrel, in a low 75mcg dose, making it a good option for women with sickle cell disease or those concerned about the risk of thrombosis.

It's also safe for breastfeeding mothers, as it won't affect breast milk, and can be started shortly after giving birth for those who want to resume contraception quickly.

What is the Zelleta dose?

Zelleta contains 75mcg of desogestrel, a synthetic hormone that mimics progestogen. Unlike traditional combined pills, it is estrogen-free, which means fewer and milder potential side effects and makes it suitable for women who cannot take estrogen.

Desogestrel is processed by the body relatively quickly, which is why Zelleta is taken once daily with no break between packets. If you're looking for alternatives with the same 75mcg dose, similar mini pills include Feanolla, Cerelle, and Cerazette.

What if I forget to take my Zelleta pill?

If you miss your usual time but remember within 12 hours, take the pill as soon as you can and continue as normal. If more than 12 hours have passed, you may not be fully protected against pregnancy. In that case, refer to the instructions in the manufacturer's pamphlet included with your medication.

What are the side effects of Zelleta?

Zelleta is well tolerated by most women, with 9 out of 10 finding the low 75mcg dose of desogestrel causes no significant issues.

A note on smoking: Women over 35 who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day should take extra care, as smoking while taking Zelleta increases the risk of serious complications including blood clots and strokes.

Common side effects (affecting around 1 in 10 users):

  • Mood swings or low moods
  • Decreased libido
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Acne or spots
  • Breast pain
  • Irregular or no periods
  • Weight gain

Rare adverse reactions (affecting around 1 in 1,000 users):

  • Skin conditions such as rashes, hives, or painful lumps
  • Breast secretions or leakage

If you experience any serious discomfort, seek medical attention immediately. In an emergency, call 999.

When not to take Zelleta

Zelleta is not suitable for everyone. Do not take it if you:

  • Are allergic to desogestrel
  • Have or have had thrombosis
  • Have jaundice or cirrhosis of the liver
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding

Certain medications and medical conditions may also make Zelleta unsuitable, so it's important to mention your full medical history when completing your consultation.
