What is Levitra?
Levitra is a prescription medication for erectile dysfunction, developed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The Levitra brand has been available in the UK for over a decade and is well established as a known ED treatment.
Levitra uses the PDE- 5 inhibitor Vardenafil as an active ingredient to increase the blood flow to the penis, allowing patients to achieve firm erections and enjoy sex normally. The effects of Levitra may last for up to five hours after taking a single tablet.
How does Levitra work?
Levitra is a simple and convenient treatment for erectile dysfunction. Swallow one tablet 1-2 hours before you plan to have sex. Providing that you are adequately sexually aroused, you should be able to achieve a firm erection and have full sex as soon as the medication takes effect. Levitra’s effects will generally last for up to five hours.
Levitra uses an active ingredient called Vardenafil, this is a PDE-5 inhibitor that works to increase the blood flow to the penis. To get a full erection, the volume of blood in the penis has to increase by up to 40%. Vardenafil allows your body to function naturally when you experience sexual arousal.
Who can use Levitra?
Levitra - and its active ingredient Vardenafil; has been used by men with erectile dysfunction for well over a decade. It has proved to be generally safe; most patients use the medication successfully and without significant side effects.
When you complete your confidential medical questionnaire, our online GP will immediately review your health profile and confirm that Levitra is the right medication for your needs.
Please read the Side Effects section for full information about whether Levitra is suitable for you.
What doses of Levitra are available?
Levitra tablets are currently available at DoktorABC in three different sizes. The mg indication refers to the active ingredient Vardenafil.
- Levitra 5mg
- Levitra 10mg
- Levitra 20mg
DoktorABC’s online GP will prescribe the dosage that best suits your medical needs. Most patients are initially prescribed 10 mg tablets. Experience has shown that this is the optimal dosage for most men with erectile dysfunction. Your treatment can be adjusted if you find that you need a higher dose, or if you experience unwelcome side effects.
Younger men who suffer from ED are more likely to have psychological causes for their condition. Older men may be more vulnerable to side effects from Vardenafil. If you are a member of either age group, your first Levitra prescription may be for a trial dosage of 5 mg tablets. This is often enough to achieve a full erection and enjoy a normal sex life.
20 mg Levitra tablets are generally only prescribed when 10 mg tablets have proved ineffective. Men with a higher body weight may also benefit from a 20 mg dosage.
How to take Levitra
Levitra is designed for convenience and ease of use. Simply swallow one tablet with a glass of water 1-2 hours before you intend to have sex.
To get the best results from your Levitra treatment it is better to reduce consumption, or entirely avoid, the following foods when taking tablets:
- Fatty foods
- Grapefruit juice
You should only take Levitra if you are planning to have sex. The medication will increase the blood flow to your penis, allowing you to achieve a firm erection, but it cannot increase your actual sex drive.
Do not take more than one tablet in any 24 hour period and do not use Levitra in conjunction with any other erectile dysfunction treatment.
Taking a heavier dosage of Levitra will not result in a better quality or longer lasting erection, nor will it enhance your sexual performance or level of sexual arousal. If you exceed your prescribed dosage you will increase the risk of unwelcome side effects.
What are the side effects of Levitra?
The majority of Levitra users do not experience any significant side effects and will benefit from treatment. Nonetheless, you should be aware of possible adverse reactions before you begin your treatment.
Possible common side effects
Most patients do not experience any significant side effects when using Levitra, but the following common side effects may occur in some users:
- Blocked or runny nose
Possible adverse reactions
Very rarely patients may experience an adverse reaction to Levitra. If you experience any of the following symptoms you should discontinue your treatment and seek immediate medical advice.
- Abdominal pain
- Back pain, myalgia or arthralgia
- Abnormal vision or eye pain
- Facial edema
- Palpitation or tachycardia
- Rash or itch
If you experience serious discomfort, we recommend that you go straight to your nearest casualty department. In an emergency dial 999.
Your prescription will come with a patient leaflet giving detailed information about the medication, its ingredients, possible side effects and contraindications. Please read this leaflet carefully before you begin taking your tablets, and retain the leaflet for future reference.
When not to take Levitra
DoktorABC’s online GPs generally do not recommend combining any erectile dysfunction medication with excess alcohol. Drinking to excess may reduce the effectiveness of your erectile dysfunction tablet, adversely affect your sexual performance and cause unwelcome side effects.
Do not take Levitra if you:
- Are allergic to Vardenafil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- If you are taking medicines containing nitrates, such as glycerol trinitrate for angina, or nitric oxide donors such as amyl nitrite
- If you are taking ritonavir or indinavir
