What is Trimethoprim?

Trimethoprim tablets belong to the group of antibiotics that fight bacteria in human body. This antibiotic treats bladder and kidney infections, infections in ear caused by specific bacteria. The full list of infections that can be treated with Trimethoprim can be found in the product leaflet.

Before taking Trimethoprim

A person should not take Trimethoprim if they have an anemia caused by folic acid (folate) or if they are allergic to this antibiotic. If you have kidney or liver disease, you should inform your doctor about this before using Trimethoprim.

To be sure that Trimethoprim is a right medicine for you, the doctor should check these conditions:

  • Liver disease

  • Kidney disease

  • A folid acid deficiency

  • Fever, symptoms of flu, sore throat, etc.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

There are no evidences that Trimethoprim can harm an unborn baby. In case you are pregnant or planning to have a baby, tell it to your doctor to avoid any consequences.

It is proven that Trimethoprim passes into breast milk and can have a negative influence on a nursing baby. Do not take this medicine if your breastfeeding or consult with your doctor first.

It is not recommended to give Trimethoprim to children younger than 6 months old. 

How to take Trimethoprim?

Follow the instructions the doctor gave you and read the instructions provided in the product leaflet. Do not take larger or smaller doses, and do not take the medicine longer than prescribed. Take your tablets with a full glass or water.

Your symptoms can improve even before you finish the course. Despite that, you should not skip doses, because it may increase risks of further infection. Trimethoprim does not treat any viral infections, such as cold or flu.

Trimethoprim can lead to an unexpected result with some other medical tests. Inform your doctor that treats you that you are taking the antibiotic.

Trimethoprim should be stored at a room temperature and away from moisture, light and heat.

Are there any interactions while taking Thrimetropim?

It should not be taken if you have already received previous treatment for a urinary tract infection three months previously. If you are taking any other medication, be sure to tell your doctor to decide if this treatment best suits you.

What should you do if you miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, if it is too close for the next scheduled dose, then don´t take any extra pills. The extra pill will not compensate the one that has not been taken.

Dosing Information about Trimethoprim


Recommended dose for an adult person is 100 mg orally every 12 hours. The usual course is about 10 days. OR 200 mg orally every 24 hours, also for 10 days.


  • To determine the susceptibility of the bacteria to this drug, cultures and susceptibility tests should be performed.

  • Therapy may be started before the results of susceptibility tests.

From 12 to 18 years

Recommended dose for children is 100 mg orally every 12 hours. OR 200 mg orally every 24 hours. The course lasts for 10 days.


  • To determine the susceptibility of the bacteria to this drug, cultures and susceptibility tests should be performed.

  • Therapy may be started before the results of susceptibility tests.

6 Months or Older

Recommended dose is 5 mg/kg orally every 12 hours. The course is 10 days.

Trimethoprim used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections because of susceptible strains of the following bacteria: Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, etc. Also for the treatment of acute otitis media.


Like all medicines, Trimethoprim Tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Stop taking the tablets immediately and seek urgent medical advice if the following occur:

  • Allergic reaction symptoms of which may include hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue, or collapse.

  • Aseptic meningitis (a combination of symptoms such as headache, fever, stiff neck, tiredness)

  • Severe skin reactions such as erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (severe skin rash with flushing, fever, blisters or ulcers) or toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Tell your doctor if you notice any of the following side effects or notice any other effects not listed:

  • If you get increased bruising, nose bleeds, sore throats or infections

  • feeling or being sick, this is usually mild and disappears after stopping the tablets

  • sensitivity to light, skin rashes which may be itchy

  • muscle pain

  • Headache, red, swollen tongue
