Product information

What is Millinette?

Millinette is a combined pill that contains oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) as an active hormone. It also contains gestodene as a progestogen substitute. Millinette has an approximately 99% likelihood of preventing unwanted pregnancy when used exactly in accordance with medical instructions.

If you cannot tolerate oestrogen, are a heavy smoker over 35, or are overweight, your doctor may prescribe an alternative type of birth control such as a progestogen based mini pill.

Your GP may recommend Millinette if you suffer from menstrual related problems like PMS, period pains or heavy bleeding.

How to take Millinette

Millinette is a monophasic pill supplied in memo strips of 21 tablets. Each pill capsule is marked with a day of the week. Take the required pill, at roughly the same time every day, for 21 days. This will be followed by a 7 day break without Millinette tablets. On the 8th day start a new strip of 21 pills. You must take the pill every day, starting on the first day of your period for reliable protection against pregnancy.

You may experience some vaginal bleeding during the 7 day breaks. It’s important to start a new memo strip of 21 pills on the 8th day, regardless of any bleeding.

Who can use Millinette?

Millinette is usually considered safe if you meet the basic health requirements and follow our GP’s instructions exactly.

Providing that you are not overweight, or a heavy smoker over 35 your GP will probably consider prescribing Millinette.

If you are oestrogen intolerant, or you are at risk of thrombosis or certain other serious conditions, you may be prescribed a progestogen mini pill instead.

Millinette may help if you suffer from menstrual related problems. It may also reduce the risk of fibroids, ovarian cysts and non-cancerous breast disease.

When you complete our short online health questionnaire, our duty GP will immediately check your medical status to ensure that Millinette is the right birth control pill for you.

Please read the Side Effects section for full information about whether Millinette is suitable for you.

What is the dosage of Millinette?

Millinette is available in two different sizes:

Millinette 20

Each tablet contains 20 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 75 micrograms gestodene.

Millinette 30

Each tablet contains 30 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 75 micrograms gestodene

The only difference between the tablets is their oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) dosage.

Millinette is very similar to other combined pills like Sunya, Femodene and Femodette that also use gestodene and ethinylestradiol as active hormones.

What if I forget to take my Millinette pill?

The manufacturer recommends that you take your daily pill at a set time each day for it to be effective. If you forget to take a pill and you are less than 12 hours late, take the tablet as soon as possible.

If you are more than 12 hours late, read the manufacturer’s pamphlet carefully. It contains important instructions and information about the risk of pregnancy.

What are the side effects of Millinette?

If you are healthy, and you follow the manufacturer’s and your doctor’s instructions exactly, you are unlikely to suffer any serious side effects from Millinette. Approximately 90% of women use these tablets without any problems.

As with any prescription medicine, there is a small risk of side effects and you should familiarise yourself with them before using the pill.

Can I use Millinette if I smoke?

Smoking is generally not recommended while taking Millinette, because it increases the risk of serious side effects. This is specifically true if you are over 35 years old and smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day. Possible serious side effects may include strokes and blood clots.
