Product information

What is Cilique?

Cilique is a 21-day monophasic pill that contains synthetic oestrogen and progesterone. Doctors will usually consider prescribing Cilique to healthy women below the age of menopause (approximately 45).

Cilique may ease menstrual problems such as heavy periods, PMS and pains. It may also improve your skin if you have acne.

If you are over 35 and smoke, are overweight, or are at risk of cardiovascular problems, you should consider consulting the doctor about alternative contraceptive solutions.

How to take Cilique

Cilique is a monophasic pill supplied in labelled calendar strips of 21 pills. Take each pill on its marked day for the full 21 days. It is recommended to take your pill at roughly the same time every day.

After 21 days of daily Cilique pills, take a clean break for 7 days. On the 8th day, begin a new strip of 21 pills.

You may experience light vaginal bleeding after 2-3 days without pills. Even if you are bleeding, you should begin a new strip of 21 pills on the 8th day.

Important for first time use:

You must take the pill daily, starting on the first day of your menstrual cycle for effective protection against pregnancy.

Who can use Cilique?

If you are generally healthy and are not seriously overweight, or at risk of cardiovascular problems, your doctor will probably consider prescribing Cilique. If you do suffer from certain medical problems or are over 35 and a smoker, you may want to consult the doctor for alternative contraceptive methods.

Cilique may reduce the risk of fibroids, ovarian cysts and non-cancerous breast disease. It may also help to protect against cancer of the ovaries, womb, and colon.

When you complete our short online medical questionnaire, our duty GP will immediately review your health profile to ensure that Cilique is a safe form of contraception for you.

Please read the Side Effects section for full information about whether Cilique is suitable for you.

What is the dosage of Cilique?

Cilique is a combined pill that contains synthetic oestrogen and progesterone in the following dosages:

Norgestimate 250mcg

Ethinyl Estradiol 35mcg

Cilique is similar to the combined pill Lizinna that contains identical doses of Norgestimate and Ethinyl Estradiol. If you follow doctor’s and manufacturer’s instructions exactly, you are unlikely to experience any problems from these dosages.

What if I forget to take my Cilique Pill?

Less than 12 hours late

Take each daily pill at approximately the same time every day. If you forget to take a daily pill - and you are no more than 12 hours late - take the pill immediately, even if it means taking two pills in one day. At this point, you should still be safe.

More than 12 hours late

If you are more than 12 hours late taking your daily pill, contraception may be impaired and you are advised to use a condom or other contraceptive method in addition. Keep taking the pill and follow the  instructions in the product leaflet. Depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, these may vary.

If you forget to take more than one pill from a single strip you should consult our doctor immediately.

What are the side effects of Cilique?

If you follow manufacturer’s and doctor’s instructions exactly, there is an approximately 90% chance that you will not experience any unwelcome side effects when you use Cilique.

However, you should be aware of any possible side effects before you begin to use this contraceptive pill.

Can I use Cilique pills if I smoke?

Doctors do not recommend smoking when using Cilique, becauses it raises the risk of side effects. Women over 35 years old, who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day are considered to be at high risk of serious side effects, such as strokes and blood clots and more.

Possible common side effects

Most patients who use Cilique correctly do not experience any significant side effects, but the following common side effects may occasionally still occur:
